Speech Therapy

A speech pathologist diagnoses communication difficulties or swallowing disorders in individuals of any age. These difficulties can arise from developmental delays, brain injuries, strokes or other medical conditions.

Speech therapists assess these diagnoses to understand how their participants would best benefit from support. They are trained to develop treatment plans with exercises that are designed to improve communication skills and safe swallowing.

Speech therapy falls under Capacity Building Supports in NDIS plans, so it is funded by the NDIS. However, the support should be assessed and deemed as necessary. It also needs to be administered by a certified and practising Speech Pathologist.

• Finding strategies that develop your communication using communication aids and other technologies. These resources may be shared amongst family members or carers where seen to be beneficial.
• Providing communication support, including speech, writing, reading and using communication aids. 
• Suggesting physical exercises to improve speech, eating and swallowing. 
• Working alongside other healthcare professionals, such as physiotherapists, to identify a support plan that works for you.
